The family of a teenager who broke his back in a parakiting accident have spoken of their devastation.

Joseph Probst, 14, remains in hospital after falling 15ft while parakiting with his father Andrew at Victoria Park, in Arbroath, Angus, on Saturday.

He is awaiting specialist treatment for his injuries after apparently breaking two bones in his back.

Joseph's mother Ria, of Letham, just outside Forfar, said the family was devastated by what had happened and was taking "one day at a time".

He was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee where his condition was serious but stable.

"It's a hard thing to cope with but we're just going to have to take things slowly, a day at a time," said Mrs Probst.

Parakite involves being pulled into the air by a large traction kite.

His father Andrew told Aberdeen's Press and Journal newspaper they were trying out a bigger kite than usual.

It is thought that when his son tried out the equipment, one of the power lines broke, causing the boy to fall to the ground.

Mrs Probst added: "He loved parakiting so much, he tried to do it every weekend or as much as he could.

"It was just a really unfortunate fall."
