An elderly man has been arrested after driving an estimated 10 miles the wrong way down a motorway.
The incident happened at around 1930 BST on Thursday, after the man, who is aged 75 and from the Bristol area, joined the M4 at J14 for Hungerford, Berkshire.
He drove down the hard shoulder of the eastbound carriageway towards Wiltshire, and left the motorway at J15 for Swindon.
Here he started driving on the A419, before police caught up with him at the Commonhead Roundabout near the A420 junction.
A police spokeswoman said: "He was in a distressed and confused state, and was examined by a police surgeon.
"The examination revealed he was not under the influence of any intoxicant but had suffered an illness whilst driving, causing impairment to his ability to drive.
"He was released without charge into the care of his family."
