A million-pound investment by a motor sport company will create up to 25 new jobs in mid Wales.

Maxsport Competition Tyres is one of the leading suppliers of re-treaded tyres to the motor sport sector in Europe and Asia.

The company plans to retread more than 50,000 tyres a year for the motor sport and off-road vehicle market at Rhayader.

Maxsport has invested in the 37,000 square feet unit at the town's Brynberth Estate, where it currently employs nine people.

"Tyre production is a complex and hi-tech business which is why we've brought production in-house at Rhayader," said the company's director, Peter Burgess.

"Rhayader is an excellent location for us because it is close to our main suppliers and clients as well as the most competitive rally stages in the country."

Maxsport retreads old tyres with new rubber through a complex operation. It adds life to used tyres and improves their grip and durability for the motor sport industry by using specially-designed treads.

The opening was carried out by by Welsh economic development and transport minister Andrew Davies on Thursday.
