Emma's mother has been tracked down
Detectives have traced the mother of a newborn baby left outside a hospital five weeks ago.

Emma, as she was named by nurses, was abandoned wrapped in a towel and plain white pillowcase and placed inside a large blue shopping bag.

Gifts from well-wishers were sent from all over the UK.

She was discovered by a man at the door of the maternity unit at Glasgow's Southern General Hospital and foster parents were found for Emma a few days later.

She was thought to be only between 24 and 48 hours old when she was left, but was in perfect health and weighed 7lb 6oz.

Police had appealed to a young woman of Asian appearance who was seen driving a car along Govan Road, near the hospital, on the night Emma was found.

The vehicle passed the entrance a couple of times, before turning in to the grounds. It was thought a baby may have been in the car.

The main concern of detectives at the time was that Emma's mother may have been in need of medical attention.

Police appealed unsuccessfully for her to come forward and CCTV pictures also drew a blank.

Posters, featuring Emma's pictures, were put up in the hospital grounds in a bid to jog people's memories.

A police spokesman said that Emma's mother, whose identity will be kept a secret, is "receiving support from relevant agencies", and that a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Detectives thanked members of the public for helping in the search for the 23-year-old woman.

A spokesman for the Southern General said: "We are delighted that baby Emma's mother has been traced.

"Staff who cared for her during her first few days of life will be heartened by the news."
