The A149 at Stalham in Norfolk remained closed on Sunday as police investigated a collision which claimed a man's life.
The pedestrian was walking along the A149 bypass close to Richardson's boatyard when he was hit by a vehicle police now believe was a coach.
The extent of the man's injuries had earlier led officers to suspect he could have been hit by another vehicle before being struck by the coach.
The man was injured at about 0230 BST on Saturday morning.
Officers said the driver of the coach stopped immediately after the collision and called the emergency services.
Police have not released further details or the identity of the man who was killed.
They would like to hear from anyone who was travelling along the Stalham bypass in either direction between 0100 and 0245 BST.
