New licences 'harder to forge'
Credit card-style driving licence
The new licences will come into effect next June
A new driving licence system in Jersey will be more secure and harder to forge, according to a senior official.

The credit card-style licence will be introduced in the island next June.

Driver and Vehicle Standards Department chief officer Rowan Minckley said the new cards would be similar to those used on the continent.

They would be small plastic cards with the owner's photograph digitally printed on them.

Mr Minckley said the card licences used now were less durable and easier to forge than the new ones.

He said there were no plans to charge more for the licences when drivers come to renew them.

The new system should come into effect from next June, after a company has been chosen to produce the licences.
