By-election polls close

Mr Daisley had been an MP for just two years

Polls have closed in the by-election caused by the death of Labour MP Paul Daisley.

There was a voter turnout of just over 36%, officials said.

Mr Daisley, who was elected as MP for the London constituency of Brent East with a majority of 13,047 in 2001, died in June this year aged 45. He had been suffering from cancer.

At the 2001 general election, Mr Daisley won with 63.21% of the vote, with the Tories second with 18.21% of votes cast and the Liberal Democrats picking up 10.57%.

Mr Daisley, a former leader of Brent Council in north London, took over the seat from Ken Livingstone, now Mayor of London.
