New device has burglars reeling
Pub landlords on Wearside are using a new device to crack down on raids on fruit machines.

Several licensed premises in the Hetton and Houghton areas have been targeted over the last six weeks.

Northumbria Police, through the Hetton Community Police Team and funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, have helped pubs with crime prevention measures.

They are using a "smart water" device hidden inside the machines which sprays thieves with an invisible liquid, which shows up under ultraviolet light.

Sergeant Henry Gustard said: "This is a clever device which can literally help us catch thieves redhanded.

"Burglars who are intent on committing these offences should think twice."
