An eight-year-old girl has been killed and her mother injured when they were hit by a car on a zebra crossing in Billericay.

The accident happened just after 1900 BST on Thursday when a red Toyota car and a blue Ford Fiesta collided as they were approaching the crossing in Southend Road.

The Toyota, which was being driven by a 21-year-old, then hit the central reservation before colliding with the mother and daughter.

The eight-year-old died at the scene.

The 38-year-old woman is in Basildon Hospital being treated for leg injuries.

Essex Police have described the little girl's death as "a tragic incident."

The 21-year-old man, who is from Wickford, was questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been released on police bail.
