More than 35 firefighters tackled a huge fire at a tyre dump on the Cornwall-Devon border.
Crews were called to Boyton, near Launceston, at 1915 BST on Tuesday.
The fire started in a pile of 600 tyres, and then spread to 60 nearby bales of hay.
People living in the area said a large pall of smoke could be seen from miles away.
Damping down
Fire crews were drafted in from Launceston, Bude, Bodmin, Truro and Holsworthy.
It took them two hours to bring the flames under control, but fire officers said at no time were buildings or people at risk.
They remained at the scene into the night damping down.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
