Couple in kidney swap
Southmead Hospital
The couple were shopping together nine days after the operations
A husband has saved his wife a lifetime of dialysis by giving her one of his kidneys.

Garage owner Ian Rijnenberg, 50, and his 55-year-old wife Caroline are recovering at their home in Burlescombe, Devon, after the operation earlier this month.

Her kidney disorder was diagnosed in 1988, and worsened until last September when she was told dialysis would be required to keep her alive.

Mr Rijnenberg suggested himself as a kidney donor when they went for a consultation at Bristol's Southmead Hospital to discuss a possible family donor.

Nine days after the separate operations, the couple were shopping together.

Mr Rijnenberg said: "I did it for Caroline, but I also did it for the quality of life for both of us."

His wife said: "It is incredible. I feel really well."
