Man released in murder inquiry
A man who was being questioned in connection with the death of a man in Newcastle has been released without charge.

Mark McKenna, 25, from Gerald Street in Newcastle died on Thursday morning.

Police said he was a victim of a serious assault which happened at 0020 BST on Thursday in the West End of the city.

Police say the cause of death remains unclear.

Detectives are continuing to question a 17-year-old youth in connection with he incident.

Mr McKenna man was taken by ambulance to Newcastle General Hospital, where he died less than an hour after being found.

A post mortem examination has been carried out.

Detectives have also spoken to two other people in connection with the incident, and have appealed to a third person to come forward.

They were keen to speak to a woman who called the police to report an incident on Elswick Road, and she came forward on Thursday afternoon.

They are also hoping to speak to anyone who seen anything suspicious on Elswick Road, near to Beech Grove Road, and Sovereign Place between 2345 BST on Wednesday and 0045 BST on Thursday.
