The Settle to Carlisle railway is 72 miles long

The Settle to Carlisle railway line is to be closed for two five-day periods while refurbishment costing more than £3m is carried out.
Engineering work will close sections of the line between 29 September and 3 October and again from 6 to10 October.
The work will involve renewal of track and structures.
Services at weekends are expected to operate normally.
The line will be closed between Appleby and Settle stations from during the first week and between Appleby and Garsdale stations during the second week.
Bridge work
Renovations to viaducts and improvements to drainage will take place between Appleby and Settle.
The line will be re-opened for the weekend of 4 and 5 of October, in between the two closures.
David Wiggins from Network Rail said it would mean less disruption in the long run:
"This is a major housekeeping job..
"It is about reconstructing bridges, putting new track down and making sure historic viaducts stay good for another 100 years or so."
