The proposed St Martin's Community Centre has won a huge boost with a £1.2m cash injection from the Board of Health.
The money will be rent in advance, allowing the Board to use the centre for health services.
Churchwarden Henry Goodeve, one of the main project co-ordinators, said: "I'm absolutely delighted.
"It's really what we needed. It's all come together and is a terrific impetus."
