Rescue for man trapped in quarry

Air ambulance flew to quarry rescue
A 50-year-old man was rescued on Wednesday after being trapped for two days in a quarry north of Tredegar.

He was taken by air ambulance to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, suffering hypothermia and dehydration from spending two days at the quarry.

Police said the man had been found by a passer-by and described the victim's condition as not life-threatening, with a possible fracture to his left elbow.

He went into the quarry driving a jeep.

Brecon Beacon National Park warden Jon Pimm has said that cars often get stuck in Ystrad Quarry, Trefil, especially in wet weather.

The quarry is popular with off-road drivers, and Mr Pimm said that when they cleaned up the quarry in March they found a number of 4X4 vehicles and scramble bikes that had become stuck and abandoned.

They went to the quarry just before 2pm after getting a call from the ambulance service.

A police inspector said they had been told the casualty had been there for two days.
