Indian officials say two Kashmiri militants have been killed after trying to storm an army building in the town of Poonch, north of Jammu, the winter capital of Kashmir.
A woman was also killed in the exchange of gunfire, and her children wounded.
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks that have followed the reported killing by Indian security forces of Ghazi Baba, one of the leaders of the separatist group Jaish-e-Mohammad.
He is said to have been one of the conspirators behind the attack on the Indian parliament in Delhi in 2001.
More than 20 people have died in two days of violence in the region which is disputed between India and Pakistan.
Islamic rebels, fighting for Kashmir's independence from India or its merger with Pakistan, seem to have stepped up attacks on government forces after Ghazi Baba's reported death, correspondents say.
Both India and Pakistan claim the entirety of the Kashmir region as their own, and have gone to war three times over it.
