Action needed over rail bridges
Engineers say that action needs to be taken to save two footbridges in Grange-over-Sands from falling down onto the railway line.

The Berners Close bridge has already been closed to the public because it is dangerous and urgent work is needed on the neighbouring Clare House Lane bridge.

Berners Close bridge used to provide a link to the western end of Grange Promenade, but owner South Lakeland Council was forced to close it 18 months ago because it was becoming dangerous.

Pedestrians were diverted to Clare House Lane bridge nearby, which was given new temporary fencing.

Now a new engineers' report warns that there has been further deterioration - which could start to threaten trains passing below.

A meeting of South Lakeland's cabinet will decide whether to appoint a Network Rail approved contractor to make Clare House Lane bridge safe for another 3 to 5 years.

It is hoped that replacement bridges might be funded through the major Pool Promenade and Public Art project in Grange.
