Police in the eastern Indian city of Calcutta say they have seized more than 20,000 rounds of ammunition used in AK-47 rifles.
The raid on a pick-up truck in the west of the city was made late on Wednesday after a tip-off.
The owner of the vehicle is being sought, but no arrests have been made.
Police have been on high alert since receiving intelligence reports that huge quantities of weapons and explosives were entering West Bengal state from neighbouring countries. Where the consignment was bound for is unclear.
Calcutta police chief Sujoy Chakraborty said the ammunition was probably intended for Kashmir militants.
"The vehicle was likely to leave for Jammu and Kashmir within a day or two," he told the AFP news agency.
Mr Chakraborty said it was the city's biggest weapons haul in recent history.
