The funeral of a Scottish woman who was killed in the suicide bomb attack on the UN's Baghdad headquarters, was held on Wednesday.

UN worker Fiona Watson, 35, was among 21 people killed by the blast on 19 August.

Ms Watson, from the fishing village of Pittenweem in Fife, was working as a political affairs officer for top UN official Sergio Vieira de Mello, who also died in the attack.

Family and friends in the small village on the east coast of Fife were shocked to hear of Ms Watson's death.

Her father, Andrew, said at the time that his daughter had only just returned to Iraq from a period of leave, during which she had visited him and his wife Margaret, a retired teacher.

UN attended

Ms Watson's brother Hamish said the family were pleased to have been able to spend some time with her before her death.

Ms Watson joined the UN almost four years ago and had been to many of the world's hotspots.

She was previously with the European Commission and for a period worked for the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the largest regional security organisation in the world.

Ms Watson had only recently transferred to Baghdad after working on the Oil for Food programme at the UN's New York headquarters.

The funeral service took place at Kirkcaldy Crematorium, Fife, at 11.45BST on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Fife Constabulary said the funeral had been attended by a representative of the United Nations.
