Train maker's future discussed
Trans-Pennine train
Bombardier lost its bid for a huge Trans-Penine contract
The transport minister Kim Howells has visited Derby-based train maker Bombardier to discuss the company's future.

In August, the firm lost out on a £200m order to build new Trans-Pennine trains and now has a gap in its order book after 2004.

Bombardier says it is reviewing its position in the UK.

Some people have voiced fears this could spell the end for Derby's long association with the railways.

Long history

The MP for Derby North, Bob Laxton, met Dr Howells to make clear something has to be done to save the country's last remaining train manufacturer.

He said before the meeting: "Really I'm hoping that he will be able to give us some good news for Derby.

"Particularly for Bombardier and the rail industry in the area.

"After all, we have had a rail industry in the city for the last 163 years."
