Iraq: Should the UN become more involved?

American officials have said that the United States is to ask the United Nations to approve the creation of a multinational force in Iraq in return for ceding some political authority.

Although no exact details have been released, a draft resolution approved by President George W Bush could be put before the Security Council this week.

It is hoped that UN approval will persuade big military powers including India, Pakistan and Turkey to contribute troops to Iraq.
