Jersey ace's son marks centenary
Harry Vardon
Harry Vardon: Legend of golf
The son of Jersey's most famous golfer is at the British Open this week, a century after his father won his fourth of six titles.

Harry Vardon, who was born in Jersey and grew up playing on the Grouville links course, still holds the record for the most Open wins.

His last win was in 1914, but the man dubbed as one of the most famous people to come out of Jersey and one of the best players ever to pick up a club is still revered in the game.

Vardon is also immortalised for the over-lapping grip known as the Vardon grip.

Peter Howell, who is a guest of honour at the Royal St. George's event, thinks his father would easily compete with today's stars like Tiger Woods.

He said: "He might struggle to get to grips with the game's modern equipment.

"But in 12 years he was always in the frame for the Open, which takes a bit of beating, even these days."
