The case for tighter security
Dr Gary Schmitt
Should America be spending even more money on security?

In a Hardtalk interview on 17 July Tim Sebastian speaks to Dr Gary Schmitt, Executive Director of the Project for the New American Century.

A former intelligence adviser and director of the President's Foreign Intelligence advisory board under Ronald Reagan, Dr Gary Schmitt now heads up the Project for the New American Century - a neo-conservative think-tank aiming to promote US military and economic hegemony.

The project promotes massive spending on the armed forces, strengthening ties with democratic allies while challenging hostile regimes.

The project's statement says, "such a Reaganite policy of military strength and moral clarity may not be fashionable today. But it is necessary if the United States is to build on the successes of this past century and to ensure our security and our greatness in the next."

As President Bush completes his tour of Africa, Dr Gary Schmitt talks to Tim Sebastian about how events post September 11th have re-written the President's foreign policy.

HARDtalk can be seen on BBC World at 03:30 GMT, 08:30 GMT, 11:30 GMT, 15:30 GMT, 18:30 GMT and 23:30 GMT.

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 03:30 GMT and 22:30 GMT
