Part of the A1 near Peterborough will be closed on Thursday night to install a temporary safety barrier.
The southbound carriageway between Carpenter's Lodge and Wittering, north of Peterborough, will be closed from 2000 BST to 0600 BST on Friday to install 250 metres of barrier.
The whole width of the carriageway is needed for the operation.
During the closure, a diversion route will be signed from Wothorpe along the A43 to Duddington, then on to the A47 to join the A1 at Wansford.
Graham Littlechild, Highways Agency project manager said:
"For the safety of motorists using this busy trunk road it is essential to protect the existing central reserve safety barrier which does not conform to appropriate safety standards.
"Closing the carriageway overnight means that we can carry out the work quickly and cause minimal disruption."
When the A1 southbound carriageway re-opens, there will be two narrower lanes with a 40mph speed limit from Carpenter's Lodge roundabout for approximately
three-quarters of a mile.
This will be in place for several months while a new permanent safety barrier is designed and installed.
