Police see staff shortfall

Officers are helping their colleagues while they are off duty
The front line of Guernsey's law enforcement is being stretched thin because of a shortage of police officers.

Home Affairs President Deputy Mike Torode says the committee is trying to make up the shortfall of 20 personnel.

Reaching a full complement is unlikely in the short-term, with three more staff due to retire in the next few weeks.

But Deputy Torode says officers are currently prepared to work extra hours when needed, and does not believe this is currently affecting morale.

Force morale

Deputy Mike Torode says steps are being taken to recruit more officers.

He said: "It's not a continual thing and it's not having any effect on morale, although it certainly has the potential to have an adverse effect.

"But officers are keen and enthusiastic and they realise that their colleagues need their assistance and tomorrow it might be them that needs assistance from an off-duty colleagues.

"They quite willingly come in and help as and when required."
