Detective Inspector Mick Brooks said: "This is a particularly vicious crime and we are hoping that by releasing a photo of the terrible injuries sustained by the victim, witnesses will come forward.

"From speaking to the lady I know she was unable to go to church on Sunday because she couldn't kneel to pray, as the bruises on her knees were too painful.

"Someone must have seen something, and we are urging you to come forward if you saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area."
