Nearly 50 fire fighters were needed to put the fire out
An investigation has begun into the cause of a fire which has destroyed about 60 tonnes of recycling material at a plant in Merthyr Tydfil.

The blaze ripped through Green Waste Recycling Limited in the Cyfarthfa Industrial Estate on Monday evening.

Nearly 50 fire fighters were called to tackle the flames which partially damaged a single storey factory unit through the heat radiating from the fire.

There were fears that people living nearby would have to be evacuated from their homes, but the fire was brought under control at about 2330 BST.

Police and a fire investigation team have begun conducting an examination into the cause of the fire but have said they are keeping an "open mind".

Fire investigation officers carried out detailed studies of the area on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: "So far no cause has been established into how the fire started.

"We are continuing with our investigation," she added.
