The corporation's budget
- The BBC has reported a net debt of £74m but an increase of £346m (17%) in spending on programmes.
- The licence fee, which provides more than 94% of BBC funding, brought in £2.659bn.
- The debt is due to the corporation's digital expansion plans but it aims to break even by 2006.
- The BBC's most senior executives received lower bonuses than last year, despite what the report calls the broadcaster's "strong performance".

- The BBC said it had cut bonuses to reflect "the view that there is reduced competition for top staff from the private sector".
- The corporation's pension scheme is more than £1bn in deficit when calculated using strict new accounting standards.
- The broadcaster's commercial businesses returned a record £147m to be ploughed back into programme making.
Television
- BBC One's audience share stayed the same as last year, 26.5%, beating ITV1 for the second year running.
- In the year which saw the launch of BBC Four, the corporation's digital channels took a 1.4% share of the audience.
- CBBC leapt from 16th to fifth place for its share of children's viewing.
- CBeebies is the most popular children's channel in digital homes, with a 7% share.
- BBC Two increased its audience share by 0.1% in 2002-2003, to a four year-high of 11.2%.
Radio
- BBC Radio launched its remaining three digital stations and added 400,000 new listeners, reaching a record 53.5% of the audience.
- Radio 1's share declined for the second year running to 7.9%.
- Radio 2 saw its weekly reach rise by a third of a million, to £13.2m.
- Radio 3 had its most successful Proms ever with more than 2m listeners tuning in from the festivals around the UK.
- Radio 4 ended 2002 with a record weekly reach of 10.3m - one in five UK adults.
News
- BBC News was watched by 70% of the population according to an ICM poll.
- BBC News Online's figures soared during the Iraq war with a record 140m page impressions in the first week.
- BBC News 24's 15 minute weekly reach in multichannel homes rose by 36% to 2.2m.
New media
- BBCi's monthly reach rose from 34% to a peak of 43%, meaning it remains Europe's most widely-visited content site.
- The BBC became the first broadcaster to provide interactivity across all digital TV platforms.
- More than a million messages a month were generated by BBCi via email, text and message boards
