Car hit on level crossing
The driver was left shocked but no passengers were hurt.
An elderly couple's car has collided with a train on a level crossing in Lincolnshire.

Both escaped serious injury in the incident which happened at 0850 BST on Tuesday, just off the A46 in the village of Collingham, between Newark and Lincoln.

The barriers were down at the time.

The driver was left shocked but no passengers were hurt.

Train examined

The train, operated by Central Trains, had left Newark, Nottinghamshire, bound for Lincoln at 0832 BST.

Paul Gledall from British Transport Police said they are investigating the cause of the accident: "We believe visibility was quite poor for the driver.

"The barriers were down, there is no reason to believe there is any problem with the level crossing.

"The car has gone through and struck the side of an oncoming train."

Central trains say that while the train was not badly damaged it was being examined closely and alternative arrangements would be made for passengers.
