Body found in canal
Sharpness Canal in Gloucestershire
The man fell into the Sharpness Canal near Sellers Bridge
Divers searching a Gloucestershire canal have found the body of a man thought to have drowned after falling from a boat.

A local man heard the man's cries for help at 1100 BST on Monday, and jumped into the Sharpness Canal near Sellers Bridge to try and help.

The emergency services were called to the scene near the Pilot Inn at Hardwicke, but hopes of finding the man alive faded, and his body was discovered on Monday evening.

Police say they are not treating the death as suspicious.

It is thought the man, who has not been named, may have suffered a heart attack, causing him to lose his balance and tumble into the water.

A police spokesman said: "Police divers have recovered the body of a middle-aged man from the Sharpness Canal.

"It is believed the unidentified man had fallen from a boat into the canal.

"A local man heard him shouting for help and dived into the water but was unable to locate him."
