A boy who suffered a stroke at the age of three is to be honoured with a special award.

Nine-year-old Jacob Goodier from Derbyshire has overcome partial paralysis to win the accolade.

Six years ago he suffered a stroke which affected his right side.

Initially it meant he could not walk, talk or move his arm.

I don't think I could have gone through what he's been through

Although Jacob still needs a bit of help, years of treatment and willpower means he now can take part in his favourite hobbies - swimming, riding his bike and playing football.

His older brother James was so impressed with his determination to get better that he decided to nominate him for a special 'courage award' organised by the Stroke Association.

James said: "He's very courageous, because I don't think I could have gone through what he's been through.

"At times it's been very difficult because he couldn't have done things that Mum and Dad asked him to do."

'Ego boost'

His mother Michelle added: "He feels very important and famous and his ego has been boosted tremendously through it.

"He's had some very, very tough times and this is one of the fantastic times for him - and hopefully he'll remember it forever."

The award ceremony takes place in London later this week.
