Police were attacked as they helped remove a body
Police officers have been attacked with bricks and bottles in the nationalist Bogside area of Londonderry.

One officer was hurt in the hail of missles as police helped to remove a body from a house at Durrow Street on Sunday night.

Superintendent Johnny McCarroll said it was a "despicable act".

He said the attack was upsetting for the bereaved family.

"One of my officers was struck in the chest and arm and was injured as a result of that," he said.

"I find it detestable that after 11pm at night, youths of 10, 12 and 14 years of age are still out on the streets.

"I have to ask what responsibility their parents are taking for them?

"This is the second time that the police have been attacked. There was one incident six months ago."

On Friday night, police were lured by a hoax caller to a loyalist housing estate near Belfast.

The caller claimed children were trapped in a burning house in Ballybeen, Dundonald.

When police and fire officers arrived at the scene, they were attacked with bottles.
