Rubbish scheme is runaway success
The runaway success of a city's kerbside recycling scheme has led to a short-term supply problem with residents using up their initial supply of plastic bags.

Operations bosses at Worcester City Council have pledged to ensure new supplies are sent out but admit they were surprised at the overwhelming response to the first two collection rounds.

They are hoping to renew supplies after householders complained they had already used up the initial 8-week supply of bags.

Around 43 tons of plastic and cans and 267 tons of paper and textiles were collected in the first month of the scheme.

Kerbside Promotions Officer Emma Stuart said: "Recycling in Worcester has got off to an even better start than anyone imagined, and the enthusiasm shown by householders has caught everyone by surprise."

According to Ms Stuart, collection crews have also pulled out all the stops to make the scheme a success, putting in 12 and 14-hour days to ensure that rounds are completed.

She said: "The crews have performed brilliantly and without their dedication and determination to complete the job, the scheme would not have been the success it so clearly is."
