China's official news agency is reporting that a farmer has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for killing a giant panda.
The farmer, Yang Shicheng, from Baoxing County in southwest China, is reported to have shot and skinned the panda cub and sold the fur to another man for the equivalent of $24.
The pelt was then sold for ten times that price to another buyer who was caught by police when he tried to sell it on again.
In addition to the 14-year sentence Mr Yang will have to pay a fine of over $1,000, while five other people involved in the illegal transactions were given prison sentences of 12 years each.
