Teenage girls killed in crash
Kayla Young and Amy Jones
Kayla Young and Amy Jones were both killed in the accident
Two men have been arrested over the deaths of two 13-year-old girls who were hit by a car as they walked on a pavement.

Police say a white Ford Mondeo crossed a central reservation and went on to the opposite footpath.

A second car, a red Vauxhall Astra, is also believed to be involved.

The incident happened at 2000 BST on Sunday on the A46 Laceby Bypass in North East Lincolnshire.

The girls have been named as Amy Louisa Jones, from Aylesby, and Kayla Abbie Young, from Healing, both near Grimsby.

Police say Amy was pronounced dead at the scene, while Kayla died at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby.

Mother's tribute

Both girls were pupils at Healing Comprehensive School.

Kayla Young's mother, Chrissie, described her daughter as "affectionate and very loving".

In a statement, she said: "The things that I will miss about her are her cuddles and text messages telling me that she loves me.

"She was very affectionate and very loving. She would do anything for anybody.

"She was very popular at school and was a typical 13-year-old girl looking forward to turning fourteen.

"The two girls were best friends and celebrated their birthdays within a few weeks of each other in July."

Witness appeal

She added: "The phone has not stopped ringing and the number of text messages we have received have been unbelievable, so many people have given us their support."

Inspector Neil Whiting from Humberside Police said the pair were struck by the Mondeo.

"Our initial impressions are that a white Mondeo caused the deaths of the two children, but a Red Vauxhall Astra was seen in company with the Mondeo.

"My appeal is to motorists and members of the public who may have seen these two vehicles before the crash."

A 29-year-old man, from Cleethorpes, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, driving over the prescribed alcohol limit and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

He sustained minor injuries and is being interviewed by officers at Grimsby Police Station.

A 23-year-old Grimsby man was also arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He is alleged to have been driving the other vehicle that was possibly involved in the accident.
