Pupils lead the way to school

Parents are being persuaded to leave the car at home
Pupils at a school in York are using computers to cut down on car journeys to classes.

As part of Walk to School Week, Dunnington Church of England Primary School has devised what it is calling a Walkshare Database.

The scheme aims to match up details of families who live near to the school so they can jointly work out an alternative to the car.

It should reduce school gate congestion by persuading more parents to walk their children to school.

Head teacher Roger Highton said: "The Walkshare Database aims to encourage parents to make informal arrangements with other families nearby to share the responsibility for the journey to and from school."

Catherine Elliott, City of York Council's school traffic plan co-ordinator, said: "We are working very closely with schools across York to attempt to get children travelling by healthy and environmentally friendly modes."
