Armed raiders have shot a man at his home near York.
Police say three men wearing balaclavas knocked on the door of Drome Farm at Elvington between 2200 and 2300 BST on Tuesday.
Andrew Handley, 41, was hit on the head with a handgun as the gang demanded money and jewellery.
The victim's father Roy, who was asleep at the time, came down to the kitchen and confronted the intruders with a shotgun.
Three shots were fired by the raiders and one hit the son in the thigh.
The men then left in a car heading towards the Grimston Bar roundabout on the A64.
The injured man was taken to York District Hospital for surgery.
Detective Chief Inspector Alan Carey of North Yorkshire Police said: "We need the public's help very urgently in finding the men who committed this terrifying crime.
"This could have been a murder.
"It is all the more shocking as gun crime is so unusual in North Yorkshire."
