A Luton man has died after firing a crossbow bolt into his head at the conclusion of a standoff with police.
A police spokeswoman said on Sunday that the 40-year-old father of two died in a hospital's intensive care department.
Police had rushed to the man's home late on Friday night after receiving a call that he was threatening to kill himself.
The unidentified man claimed to be armed with a crossbow and a knife and refused to let officers into his house.
Rushed to hospital
Police negotiators were called to the scene to speak to the man via telephone, but he told then he had injected himself with a substance and hung up.
Fearing for his safety, officers entered the house, and they said the man then fired a crossbow at himself.
He was brought to the Luton and Dunstable Hospital by ambulance with the crossbow bolt embedded in his skull, and he died on Saturday night.
Police said the man had lived alone.
