An elderly pedestrian was killed when she was in collision with a dustcart.

Sussex Police said the accident happened in Chapel Road, Worthing, at 1115 BST on Tuesday.

The woman was crossing the road when she was in collision with the Worthing Borough Council dustcart.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Ambulance Service said the woman, who was from Worthing, died at the scene.

Police closed the road for four hours so an investigation could be carried out.

Head injuries

In another fatal crash in the county, a motorist died after the car she was driving was in collision with another vehicle.

The woman was driving a Suzuki Swift car which crashed with a Ford Mondeo.

The accident happened in Paddockhurst Road in Turners Hill.

The ambulance spokeswoman said the woman was trapped for about 10 minutes in her vehicle and was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath but later died.
