Bangladesh judge angry at police

Three Bangladeshi police officers are facing contempt of court charges after they stopped the car of a High Court judge at a road junction, in the capital, Dhaka, to allow a senior police chief to pass by.

The judge, Shamsuddin Chowdhury, told the High Court the police officers ignored his complaint about stopping his car last week, even though his car bore the Supreme Court flag.

He said when their immediate bosses also appeared to treat him with arrogance; he used a legal procedure - known as the soto moto rule - to summon all the police officers to court.

The High Court judge referred the case of the three junior officers to another court for contempt proceedings.

But the judge exonerated their bosses, on condition that they make their subordinates respect the Supreme Court flag in future.
