Lorry driver's trial delayed
Stewart Guy
Stewart Guy says he knew nothing about the drugs

A Staffordshire lorry driver accused of smuggling has been told his trial will be delayed by another eight weeks.

Stewart Guy, from Uttoxeter, was arrested by French customs in Calais in January after 67 kilograms of cannabis was found in his van.

Mr Guy maintains he did not know it was there but faces several years in jail if he is found guilty of illegally transporting drugs.

He has been held without trial for the past five months and his case has been taken up by the charity, Fair Trials Abroad Trust.

Parliament protest

Mr Guy's partner, Michelle Waddington, says she rarely gets to see him.

"His mother actually passed away from lung cancer on 29 April and I managed to get a compassionate visit.

"I jumped in my car and left that night and managed to see him the next day to tell him his mother had passed away.

"That's the only time I have been able to afford to go."

Last month Mr Guy's family joined relatives of other van drivers, being held in France accused of drug smuggling, to protest outside the House of Parliament.

The families claim the British government is not doing enough to free the drivers.
