UN compound under siege
MONUC Compound Bunia
Newsnight reported on the desperate plight facing thousands of refugees in Congo. The terrible events of Rwanda in the 1990s present an ominous backdrop to the crisis in the northern town of Bunia where heavily outnumbered UN peacekeepers were struggling to protect thousands of refugees from a brutal tribal war. The UN compound there was effectively under siege and the United Nations in New York was deciding whether to send a rapid reaction force to their rescue. Newsnight heard from those within the compound and interviewed the UN live from New York.

Passive Smoking
The debate raged on with the publication of research, partly funded by the tobacco industry, that found few links between passive smoking and lung cancer or coronary heart disease. We had one of the report's authors live to explain his findings to a leading cancer research specialist here in the UK.

Saudi Arabia
Five days after the devastating bombing that killed 34 people in Riyadh Newsnight reported on whether there was a new determination to tackle terrorism in the kingdom, and the longer term impact of the attack on the tens of thousands of foreign nationals who live and work in Saudi.
