Rescuers airlifted a walker to hospital after a search on Scafell Pike in Cumbria.
More than 40 rescuers took part in the search for the un-named man after he failed to return from a solo outing.
The search began on Monday, but the man, who is from the Morecombe area, was not found until the early hours of Tuesday.
He was taken to hospital in Barrow, suffering from head injuries and hypothermia.
The search and rescue incident was coordinated by Cumbria Police.
A police spokesman said the search involved 42 rescuers on the ground from three local mountain rescue teams, some of whom had dogs.
The spokesman said the man was initially able to walk, but his condition worsened and an RAF rescue helicopter was called in.
