£1bn boost for Wearside unveiled

A further two bridges are planned for the River Wear

Plans to create 10,000 jobs and bring in £1bn worth of investment are unveiled on Wearside on Tuesday.

Over the next 15 years the Sunderland Area Regeneration Company (Arc) plan to build offices and shops in run down areas within the city.

The plans also include proposals for two new bridges over the River Wear.

Part of Sunderland Arc's regeneration plans includes reviving the former site of the Vaux brewery by creating a new office site.

However, the site is currently owned by Tesco, which said it has not yet received a bid for the land.

Arc said they were still carrying out a survey of the site to determine its worth.

Jonathan Bretherton, deputy chief executive of Sunderland Arc, said key sites in the city, including Holmeside, Farringdon row and Stadium Park next to the Stadium of Light, would be developed.

He said: "It is a 15 year plan to deliver 10,000 new jobs, 250,000sqm of office space and about 3,500 homes.

"We went to create an environment where business people want to invest and we do understand what it take to encourage private sector developers to come into a city."
