Millions of pounds is being spent on Cumbria and Lancashire's roads to try to make them safer.
The Highways Agency says the money will be used to build pedestrian crossings on busy roads and improve some junctions of the M6.
More than £32m is being spent on improving motorways and trunk roads in Cumbria and North Lancashire within the next year.
The contract for managing the roads has been awarded to Amey Mouchel, and will include the setting up a seven day a week, 24-hour control centre.
A fleet of five emergency response vehicles and motorcycles will patrol the roads 24 hours a day.
In Cumbria some of the improvements include pedestrian crossings on the A66 at Threlkeld, Braithwaite and Cockermouth and a climbing lane at Mungrisdale.
There will also be improvements to the Penrith junction of the M6 and better signing along other parts of the motorway.
