Car ploughs into house

A 90-year-old woman had a lucky escape after a car ploughed into her house on one of Worcester's busiest roads.

The accident happened between the city's Newtown Road and Canterbury Road about 0700 BST on Friday.

Annie Fairhurst had just woken up and was about to make herself a cup of tea when the car smashed into the front of her house.

Although shaken by the incident, she was not injured.

'Smashed step'

Mrs Fairhurst, who has lived in her home for more than 40 years, told BBC Radio Hereford and Worcester: "I was still in my dressing gown and was walking from the lounge into the kitchen to put the kettle on when I heard a great smash behind me.

"It knocked a hole in the door and smashed the step and everything.

"This is a dangerous corner and always has been. We've had a car land by the tree in the garden but his is the closest one has come to the house."

Mrs Fairhurst said that after two cups of tea she was feeling "alright" and joked: "I'm made of sterner stuff. I've been here for 43 years so they are trying to get me out one way or another."
