Families involved in the cases are lobbying parliament today
|
Breakfast has learnt that a group of MPs will today call for a judicial review into some of the work of Professor Sir Roy Meadow.
The paediatrician has been widely criticised for evidence he gave which led in part to the conviction of Sally Clark, the solicitor accused of murdering two baby sons.
She was released at the Court of Appeal in January.
Earlier this month Trupti Patel was acquitted of murdering her three babies. Professor Meadow had given evidence against her too.
Now other families who have been affected by his work in court, say all his evidence should be reviewed.
We spoke to Professor Alan Craft, from the Royal College of Paediatricians and Tony Coleman MP
Both interviewees agreed that lessons need to be learned, with regard to expert witnesses.
Professor Craft explained that "there is no true register of expert witnesses" as it would "not be appropriate" for professional bodies to provide them.
But he said that juries needed to have the correct information available to them so that they could properly question those put forward as expert witnesses.
And Tony Coleman MP said that at the least, courts needed to have a second expert witness.
There will be more on that story tonight on Newsnight at 10.30pm on BBC2
