About 7,000 homes have had power supplies cut after a fire broke out in an electricity sub-station.

No one was injured during the fire at Godmanchester, near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, although the fire service said a number of residents living nearby were moved to safety and part of the A14 road was closed.

A Cambridgeshire Fire Service spokesman said about 60 firefighters dealt with the incident which began at about 2030 BST on Sunday.

He said the cause was being investigated and added that there had been no reports of any explosion.

Power firm 24Seven said 7,000 customers lost power as a result of the fire but the majority had been reconnected fairly quickly.

Huntingdon Police Station also had its power cut, but police said it had not resulted in any major problems.
