Perhaps people on the mainland will realise that it hasn't been just the IRA causing trouble here. More interesting is the fact that these "loyalist" gangsters colluded with British security forces, police and the army.
About time the media showed the other side of the story here. We have had to live with these scum bags running loose for too long. Ordinary Protestants should realise these people aren't interested in them or anything but making themselves rich. Sinn Fein are engaged fully in the Good Friday peace agreement, loyalists are not interested in peace. The mayor of Belfast is a top Sinn Fein member and even Protestants will admit he has done an excellent job for all sides of the community. I would love to see Kevin Magee do a similar programme about Sinn Fein and the IRA, however the problem is that it would show them in a very positive light and that is why it will not be made.
It would be classed as pro-Republican propaganda because the reality is the only trouble currently happening in this country is coming from the loyalist ghettos.
First of all I think Kevin Magee has done an excellent job and he is very brave. Up until now our screens have been filled with "news" about what the IRA has been up to in times gone-by. The reality is that people are being killed on our streets by the so-called loyalists who are intent on breeding another generation filled with hate. I'd like to know who these "loyalists" are loyal to? Certainly not to the UK and as the comments show they have no support from people in England who view them with disgust and are now alarmed because they are getting a little taste of their ways on the streets of Bolton. It seems that it is only when citizens in England witness terror that the government listens (ie when the IRA started bombing the mainland). It is a different case over here where there is practically lawlessness with these thugs doing what they like, selling drugs, killing people, racketeering, threatening the media. This would not be tolerated in England. The only Queen they are loyal to is the one on printed on pound notes.
At last the UK public are getting a small but significant insight into loyalist mentality. These scum stand for nothing but hatred of Catholics, drug dealing and gangsterism.
Excellent programme. Though what should be emphasised is that once the feuding between loyalists abates the guns inevitably turn on innocent Catholics by the UDA using various cover names.
This is the loyalist Godfathers way of justifying their gangsterism, as defenders for God and Ulster. Whilst they enjoy the fruits of their criminal activity the ordinary working protestant endures the same social and economic deprivation as their Catholic neighbours.
As a one time very close friend of the so called "Egyptian", I really find it very hard to believe that the way in which he is being portrayed in the media is actually his doing. I grew up with him all my life until four or five years ago when I moved to England, although I haven't spoken to him in many years, nor do I want to, it saddens me deeply to hear and see what he has become.
I found your programme very sad.
I am in self-exile from Belfast - not because the so-called loyalists put me out but because I was sick at seeing ordinary lads like myself being used as camel fodder by the so-called loyalist Godfathers.
Good programme which I felt has shown the mainland what the decent working class Protestant community has to put up with on a day-to-day basis. This also happens in Republican communities. Both peoples live in fear.
I sat and watched in total amazement that known or ''suspected'' killers are allowed to walk our streets free. Why are they allowed on the mainland to continue their gang war? I was shocked when I heard about the shooting in Bolton close to where I live. I do not want these thugs and their families infiltrating our youth and possibly creating bad feeling among the Irish people who live here peacefully.
I do not care if someone is Catholic or Protestant, just dealing with every day family and work issues is hard enough.
Well done, very good programme. People in mainland UK can now see that terrorists exist on the pro-British side of the Northern Ireland coin as well as the pro-Irish side.
Brilliant programme. Overwhelming thought throughout is why are thugs in Ulster allowed to wave guns at parades, funerals and rallies, shoot them in the air and then murder people with them? In England police would be on the spot arresting them. Is inciting violence prior to implementing it legal in Ulster? Are the police afraid? Isn't the Ulster public deserving of the protection we get in England? Is there any will on the part of the British establishment to quash this mobsterism? Robert Lever from England - whether they are IRA or UDA they are all the same, scum.
I see the way you elevate IRA terrorism above that of UDA terrorism. I would question your motives here. Let's not forget that the IRA has bombed the hell of England as well as Northern Ireland over the years as well. Also Protestants do not automatically equate UDA terrorists as you seem to imply and the majority of us do get on with our Catholic neighbours, likewise they get on with us. The UDA got access to Great Britain (not the UK) as being in Northern Ireland is already the UK, being British citizens automatically gives them the right to move within the UK borders as the UK is a free country... A terrorist is a terrorist - no matter what hue and they must be defeated.
Excellent Programme.
However there was no mention of the five Catholics murdered by this crowd in north Belfast in recent years and the complete indifference of the PSNI. The reporter is a very brave man.
I watched with baited interest tonight with regards to the allegations made against John Gregg of gangsterism. Surprisingly Mr Magee showed us none. I look forward to Panorama or any BBC investigative report highlighting the criminalities and breaches of ceasefire by the Provisional IRA.
I thought that the programme was very interesting and informative. Although I am very concerned as I live in Bolton and there seems to be many of the people involved hiding in the town. One of them lives just up the road from me. (I only knew this as the shooting through the window of their house was in the local paper Bolton Evening News) It seems that there are a lot of them living in Bolton, and I am deeply concerned about the number of them and the way it will bring violence to the village where I live.
I wonder when the programme about the IRA Godfathers will be screened across the UK? The Loyalist Godfathers may be fighting each other but they are not at war with whole of Northern Ireland and the UK. Parity of esteem for both sides please BBC.
Great the BBC yet again takes political sides. That programme "Gangsters at war" shows the true side of the UDA in Belfast. So what about that other little gangster group Sinn Fein and IRA. Nothing yet on how the other side of gangsters live. That's because the IRA kill British and N. Ireland innocent so they are political people fighting a war. Where as the UDA are thugs and gangsters because at least they are killing each other.
You made the point that the gangsters should be dealt with by the police. OK point taken. If you belong to an outlawed group then you should be dealt with by the UK system, does this also apply to the PIRA and SF? Or do members of SF/PIRA not have to follow the same rules as the UFF, UDA and others? Another typical BBC programme, showing only one side of the situation.
Well done BBC on showing the scum that drags the ordinary loyalist communities down into the gutter. We are a marginalised people that needs leadership and proper political representation to address our real concerns and injustices. How about a programme now on Sinn Fein and their terrorist machine, P-IRA that drags down the ordinary, decent Catholic community in Northern Ireland, I'm sure that be an extremely interesting pantomime.
The programme has revealed that the Protestants in Belfast are unable to live with members of their own religion so how can we expect them to live in harmony with Catholics once unification takes place. In fact such activities must challenge the way many people view the activities of the IRA by comparison. We cannot allow these proven terrorists free access to the UK where they will inevitably involve even more innocent people in their activities and if any criminal activities are proven against them Adair and his family must be expelled back to Northern Ireland.
Kevin Magee's report tonight is alarming with the amount of violence being carried out against innocent Catholics by the UDA and amongst themselves. These organisations are openly terrorising innocent people and carry out gang warfare on the streets of Belfast. It has now been seen in Bolton, England where gunshots have been fired in a residential area. This gang warfare has to be stopped and the Police Service Of Northern Ireland has to take the appropriate action to bring this gang warfare to an end. There is supposed to be a peace agreement operating in Northern Ireland, but with the events shown tonight many people will not be convinced that this is the case. I think your choice to broadcast this programme was utterly stupid. Scotland is doing is hardest to try stop sectarianism in Glasgow and especially as it is involved in the two big football clubs in Scotland (i.e.) Celtic and Rangers. Your programme did nothing to help matters by showing items involving Glasgow Rangers Football Club on a number of occasions.
Scotland will be back at stage one of the fight against Sectarianism plan. Absolutely appalled by the showing of this programme.
A fascinating and important piece of investigative journalism. All too often is it emphasised in the UK media about Republican terrorism and criminal activity. Well done
