Man in court on robbery charges

A man has appeared before magistrates in Scarborough charged with four petrol station robberies.

It is alleged John Rooney, of no fixed address, robbed two stations in Manchester, one in Bridlington and one in Scarborough.

This last alleged offence is said to have happened at the Scalby Mills petrol station in Burniston Road on Tuesday.

It is also alleged that on the same day Mr Rooney used an air rifle to resist arrest.

In custody

Another charge against him alleges he stole cigarettes and whisky worth £800 from Threshers on Ramshill Road in Scarborough on Sunday.

It is also said he entered Scarborough Cricket Club on North Marine Road with intent to steal.

Mr Rooney represented himself and asked to be freed on bail.

However, the magistrates remanded him into police custody.

He will appear in court again on Monday.
